Batteries in Waitara

A flat battery isn't always a dead battery. Kartech tests the battery, alternator and starter to find out which one is the problem.

Slow to start? Test it before it quits.

Most car batteries last somewhere around three to five years, and Sydney summer heat shortens that. They tend to fail without much warning, usually on the coldest morning or in a car park.

If the battery is fine but keeps going flat, the cause is often the charging system or something drawing power with the car switched off. Testing tells you which.

Signs of a battery or charging problem

  • The engine cranks slowly, especially first thing in the morning
  • Clicking when you turn the key, but no start
  • The battery warning light is on while driving
  • Headlights dim at idle
  • The battery is more than three years old
  • Corrosion around the battery terminals

What Kartech checks

  • Battery state of health and cold cranking capacity
  • Alternator charging output
  • Starter motor draw
  • Terminals, clamps and earth straps
  • Parasitic drain when the car is off

Batteries questions

How long does a car battery last?

Typically around three to five years, depending on the battery, how the car is driven and the climate. Short trips and hot weather both shorten battery life.

My battery keeps going flat. Is it the battery?

Not necessarily. A faulty alternator or a component draining power while the car is off can flatten a good battery. Testing the battery and charging system finds the cause.

Do modern cars need anything special when the battery is replaced?

Some do. Vehicles with stop-start systems often need a specific battery type, and some need the new battery registered with the car's computer.
